The international reggae community mourns the loss of Pita Kotobalavu affectionately known as “Kai‑Man” founder and lead singer of Unity The Band. Fiji Singer passed away on January 21, 2024, at the age of 49 after a prolonged battle with cancer leaving a profound void in music and activism.

From Suva to the Reggae Capital of the Midwest

Born in Suva Fiji in 1975 Pita grew up steeped in music. Inspired by his uncle’s band The Blue Ribbon he mastered guitar keyboard and Fiji’s traditional lali drum. The Fijian meke a stylized combination of vocal storytelling and dance used in war and celebration influenced his rhythmic and lyrical expression.

Fiji Singer transformation came when he discovered Bob Marley’s classic album Soul Rebel at age 10 an awakening that propelled him toward reggae with purpose and passion. By age 15 he launched Fiji Singer first band The Islanders releasing successful albums like Island Vibes Roots Rock Reggae and Pacific Harmony in Fiji.

Unity The Band: Reggae’s Midwest Beacon

Pita emigrated to the U.S. in 2001 settling in Appleton Wisconsin and founded Unity The Band a multicultural collective that fused reggae with rock soul and hip hop. Featuring members from Fiji Jamaica Samoa and the U.S. Unity became acclaimed across the Midwest performing at festivals and releasing albums including Revival Oceania and In The Beginning.

His music was deeply rooted in messages of love peace social justice and environmental awareness honoring both his Fijian heritage and universal human values. Fiji Singer used his artistry to inspire change and uplift his community.

A Quiet Battle A Peaceful Passing

Pita battled cancer for several years keeping his diagnosis private as Fiji Singer continued to perform and create music until shortly before his passing. Fiji Singer died surrounded by family and friends at his home in Appleton. His loss resonated deeply with fans and fellow artists alike.

Fiji Singer is survived by his wife Lani and children Kai Kali and Koa. His impact extended beyond music he founded The Kai‑Man Project a foundation focused on cultural music education and promoting diversity across communities.
