JoSAA 2026 Choice Filling How to Fill Choices Strategically

Choice filling is the most critical step in JoSAA counselling. Here is how to do it right

Step 1 — Research previous year opening and closing ranks Use the JoSAA website’s previous year data section. For every institute branch combination you want check the closing ranks for the last 3 years.

Step 2 — Create three categories of choices

  • Reach choices (10–15%): Institutes where your rank is slightly above the closing rank low chance but worth trying
  • Realistic choices (50–60%): Institutes where your rank comfortably falls within the closing rank range
  • Safe choices (25–30%): Institutes where your rank is well within the closing range near-certain allotment

Step 3 — Fill 15–25 choices minimum More choices = more chances. Never fill fewer than 15 choices. The computer algorithm will give you the best possible seat among all your choices based on your rank and availability.

Step 4 — Order choices correctly Put your most preferred choice FIRST even if it’s a reach. The algorithm tries to give you your highest-ranked choice first. If unavailable it moves to your second choice and so on.

Step 5 — Lock choices before deadline Choices are NOT automatically locked. You must manually click “Lock Choices” before the deadline. Unlocked choices are not considered in seat allotment.

Critical rule: Once choices are locked, they CANNOT be changed or reshuffled for that round. Plan carefully before locking.

Understanding JoSAA 2026 Round Options Float, Freeze, Surrender

After each round of seat allotment candidates who receive a seat have three options

OptionMeaningWhat Happens
FloatAccept current seat AND remain in pool for better seat in next roundIf better seat available in round 2 based on your choices → automatically upgraded if not → current seat held
FreezeAccept current seat and STOP participating in further roundsSeat is confirmed you exit JoSAA
SurrenderReject current seat and exit JoSAAAll fees forfeited no future participation

Strategy tip: Choose Float in early rounds (1–4) to keep upgrade chances alive. Switch to Freeze once you get a seat you are happy with. Never choose Surrender unless you plan to opt out completely.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in JoSAA 2026

Mistake 1 — Not registering on Day 1 Registration and choice filling open together. Delay means less time to research, plan and fill choices carefully.

Mistake 2 — Filling too few choices Candidates who fill only 3–5 choices risk getting no seat in early rounds. Fill at least 15–20 choices.

Mistake 3 — Forgetting to LOCK choices Choices must be manually locked. Many candidates forget and their preferences are not considered. Set a reminder.

Mistake 4 — Not using Float option strategically Choosing Freeze too early means missing upgrade opportunities in later rounds with the same fee already paid.

Mistake 5 — Missing document submission deadline After seat allotment, there is a strict reporting and document submission window. Missing it means losing the seat even a top IIT seat.

Mistake 6 — OBC-NCL certificate not current year This is the most common disqualification reason. Ensure your OBC-NCL certificate is from the current financial year.
