How WBCAP Merit Index is Calculated

The merit list has been prepared strictly based on the applicant’s academic performance in the 10+2 or equivalent examination following the government’s merit based admission policy.

For most undergraduate programmes the Merit Index is calculated as follows

For BA / B.Sc / B.Com Honours: Best of 4 subjects = (Marks in Honours subject + Marks in best 3 remaining subjects) ÷ 4 × 100

For General/Pass courses: Best 4 subjects from Class 12 are considered.

For specific vocational or professional programmes: Subject specific marks may carry higher weightage as defined by individual HEIs.

The exact formula may vary slightly by institution and programme. Check the official WBCAP guidelines at wbcap.in for your specific college’s admission criteria.

WBCAP 2026 Tie Breaking Rules

The merit list PDF includes 9 tie-break rules applied when two or more candidates have identical merit index scores. In order of priority

  1. Higher marks in Honours/elective subject
  2. Higher aggregate in Class 12 all subjects
  3. Higher marks in best 4 subjects
  4. Higher marks in English
  5. Higher marks in additional language
  6. Age older candidate preferred
  7. Alphabetical order of name
