What is CBSE Class 10 Second Board Exam 2026?

The CBSE Class 10 Second Board Exam 2026 is a landmark introduction under the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. For the first time in CBSE history Class 10 students have been given the opportunity to appear in two board examinations within the same academic year a structural reform designed to reduce examination pressure and give students a genuine second chance.

More than 6 lakh students participated in the board examination. Out of which over 5 lakh students opted for improving their marks from their Phase 1 examination results while over 80,000 students appeared under the Compartment category.

The two-board system works as follows

  • Phase 1 Main Exam: Mandatory for all Class 10 students held from February 17 to March 10 2026. Result declared on April 15 2026.
  • Phase 2 Second Board: Optional for improvement up to 3 subjects and mandatory for compartment students. Held from May 15 to May 21, 2026.
  • Best Score Policy: CBSE automatically considers the higher of the two scores in each subject for the final marksheet. Students cannot lose marks by attempting Phase 2.

The exam began with Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic on May 15, 2026. Science was the most preferred subject among students opting for improvement.

CBSE Phase 1 vs Phase 2 Best Score Policy Explained

One of the most important and student friendly aspects of the new two board system is the Best Score Retention Policy

  • CBSE considers the higher of the two scores in each subject between Phase 1 and Phase 2.
  • This means a student’s final marksheet will reflect the best performance in every subject even if results differ subject to subject between the two attempts.
  • There is no risk of scoring lower overall by attempting Phase 2. If Phase 2 marks are lower Phase 1 marks are automatically retained.
  • Internal assessment for Class 10 will be conducted only once in the academic session, so students should ensure that component is completed before admission filing.

Example:

  • Science Phase 1: 72 Science Phase 2: 81 → Final: 81
  • Maths Phase 1: 88 Maths Phase 2: 74 → Final: 88
  • English Phase 1: 69 English Phase 2: 79 → Final: 79
